A phrase that the Oxford English Dictionary reports was first used in 1736. It means "to make an inventory of the merchandise, furniture, etc., in one's own possession, recording its quantity and present value, or to make a careful estimate of one's position with regard to resources, prospects, or the like."

Debut in non-ELSS Mutual Funds

On April 18th, I will be making my debut in the non-ELSS mutual fund space. So far, my MF investments have been confined to ELSS funds for tax planning.

Over the last two years of investing, I have learnt that one cannot gain too much success in our markets unless, one really has the time to spend researching each and every scrip of interest. This is particular true in the Midcap space, where all the money (and risk :-) ) lies.

So, I thought of leaving it to the experts, who spend all their time doing this. This was the rationale behind applying for Sundaram Select Midcap MF, a fund that has been performing consistently well over the last few years.

Then came the question of mode-of-investment. Well, I didn't have to think too much about this. Looking at all the risks involved, it had to be a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) ! . I see SIP as a self-healing mode of investment :-). The risk mitigation offered by this scheme naturally encourages one to go for it.

So, for the next 12 months, a sum of Rs. 2000 will be cut from my account on the 18th of every month towards this MF. The fund has an entry load of 2.25% and no exit load. So, Rs. 45 from each of these contributions would go to the fund manager :-).

Absolute Returns (as on Apr 13, 07)
Period Returns (%)
1 mth 4.3
3 mths -7.2
6 mths 3.8
1 year 11.5
2 year 132.1
3 year 253.5
